Prof. Fernando Bello from the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Surgery & Cancer at the Imperial College London visited the University of Innsbruck as a BritInn fellow from 3 June until 7 June 2019. He was a guest at the Institute of Computer Science, hosted by Prof. Matthias Harders and his team.
During his stay, Prof. Bello was able to meet and interact with students and researchers in the Interactive Graphics and Simulation group at the University of Innsbruck. Projects and research topics in Haptics, Visualisation, Augmented & Virtual Reality, and Image Guided Surgery were explained and demonstrated; this included hands-on demonstration of haptics hardware.
In addition, Prof. Bello also had the opportunity to briefly visit the Voxelmaster 4D-visualisation group at the Innsbruck Medical University and the Mechatronics and Smart Technologies group at the Management Centre Innsbruck.
Moreover, he gave a talk on "Simulation of Physical Examinations - Challenges and Opportunities" where he presented his recent related work. The lecture was very well received with about 30 attendees and lead to subsequent conversations on relevant aspects of work during that week.
Following Prof. Bello's visit, Prof. Harders had the opportunity to visit the lab and research group at Imperial College in London. The researchers are currently iterating details to shape a concrete joint H2020 proposal. They are also discussing plans to revive the surgical simulation conference series ISBMS.
